Since cyclocross predominantly involves natural surfaces (like mud, sand and grass), steep hills, pavement and man-made obstacles, bikes used for this style of riding are designed differently to standard road bikes. The frame is generally designed with a focus on being stiff and responsive but lightweight, ensuring it can be easily carried around obstacles. While still slightly heavier than those designed for road races, cyclocross bikes tend to be fitted with larger tyres and remain lighter than mountain bikes.
