Wind Trainers

What Are TYRE DRIVE Trainers?

A Tyre Drive unit generates resistance when the tyre of your bicycle comes in contact with the roller of the trainers unit. Tyre drive models offer the closest real road feel available.

Tyre drive trainers generate more noise due to variances in tyres and even in riding styles. It is crucial that only a completely slick tyre be used with any tyre drive system. Using any other tyre like a knobby MTB tyre or even a road tyre with some pattern in the tread will cause an uneven and perhaps dangerous training experience.

What Are RIM DRIVE Trainers?

The Rim Drive system offers an effective solution to some of the issues found in tyre drive trainers. This system was developed, patented, and sold exclusively by Minoura.

In having the resistance generated at the rim of the bicycle wheel, the rim drive system allows the use of any kind of tyre since the tyre never comes in contact with the trainer's roller. This eliminates the need to change a knobby tyre out for a slick tyre in order to use a trainer.

The rollers on the rim drive system don't touch the tyre at all so you won't need to worry about tyre wear, especially when warming up before a race.

So now you know the difference between the two.
Below are the models we suggest.

Minoura MAG-500

An entry level tyre-drive trainer that is perfect for beginners or those on a tight budget. Its 500 gram steel flywheel works the same as the MAG-500's big brother, the MAG-850.

Minoura MAG-850

This is Minoura's mid level tyre-drive trainer that uses Minoura's patented magnetic resistance unit. It is constructed with a heavy 850 gram machined steel flywheel to provide a smoother feel while pedaling.

Intended for the more serious rider, the MAG-850 has a more durable and wider span leg design for added stability when training hard. It also features a convenient foot pedal system that allows quick engaging and disengaging of the unit. With this, you don't need to worry about micro-adjustment everytime you use the trainer. Simply set the bike, push down the foot pedal, and you'll have the proper pressure setting in seconds.

Available with or without a remote shifter.

Minoura VFS (Variable Fluid System)

The VFS is Minoura's latest top of the range tyre-drive trainer. In combining a fluid and magnetic unit, Minoura has developed an extremely smooth and quiet trainer that offers expanded levels of resistance.

Specially designed double cup (patend pending) internal vane system moves the fluid through the unit to powerfully generate exponential resistance while the magnetic side helps to balance the unit by increasing the power range of the system.

On top of these market-leading features, the VFS also contains Minoura's heaviest ever flywheel at 1.5 kgs! This means the rider will get the smoothest spin in any range.

Available as a non-remote model only.

Minoura RDA-850

The RDA-850 is Minoura's mid-level rim drive offering. With a newly designed "Evolution" rim drive unit, the RDA-850 ensures a much smoother and silent pedaling feel even when used with knobby MTB tyres. Each roller pulley contains a high-grade sealed bearing for smooth spinning. The rubber roller is made of a material that won't damage your rim at all.

Minoura is the only makers of rim-drive trainers in the world.

Available with remote only.

Minoura RDA-1050R (Powermatic)

The best available rim-drive trainer on the market, the RDA-1050R contains a unique "Powermatic" magnetic resistance unit that provides an exponential resistance level that you dictate through your pedaling stroke.

The PowerMatic system simulates a fluid-like exponential power curve even using magnetic resistance mechanism. The resistance increases as you gain the pedaling speed.

The maximum resistance can also be controlled via the unique "Torque Limiter" device, so you can do high-speed/low-resistance training to maintain the skill for sprinting that cannot be simulated on any fluid system trainer.

The RDA-1050R also contains a heavier 1.05 kg machined steel flywheel which offers ultra smooth action and helps keep the mag unit cooler thus maximising performance even after hard use.

Available with remote only.
